Because If You Haven’t Needed It in 5 Years, It Might Be Time to Let It Go

There’s a drawer, a closet, maybe even a garage filled with “just in case” items.
You haven’t used them in years… but something says, “Maybe someday.”

Enter the 5-Year Rule: if you haven’t used it, worn it, or needed it in 5 years, it’s probably not serving your life anymore.

Remember, you’re not failing by holding onto things. You’re human, and humans keep things that connect us to identity, memory, or a version of ourselves we once were, or hoped to become.

💛 Why the 5-Year Rule Can Help:

  • It gives you objective distance from emotional attachments

  • It challenges the sunk cost mindset (I spent money on this = I must keep it)

  • It frees space held hostage by guilt, fantasy, or old versions of you

  • It helps you release identity clutter (careers, hobbies, clothes, body changes)

Ask yourself: Is this item still connected to who I am, or who I’m no longer trying to be?

This rule is best used with compassion. Especially for sentimental or “someday” items, allow a middle step:

  • Create a “Maybe” box

  • Use a “Review by” tag

  • Snap a photo before you release

✨ Want help reflecting on what stays and why? The Legacy Reflection worksheet in the Toolkit gently guides this emotional part of the journey.

Because sometimes letting go isn’t about what you’re losing. It’s about who you’re making space to become.
